They’re Practically Giving It Away
The last time I checked Amazon (five minutes ago), one could purchase 2018’s close to 15 pound New Yorker Encyclopedia Of Cartoons, still shrink-wrapped for, $13.46.
Despite that low low low bargain basement price, I think your cartoon funds could be put to better use. I never fell in love with the concept of this collection, finding that grouping cartoons by tropes lessens their individual appeal. You’re far better off buying any number of the less cumbersome, and lighter single volume New Yorker Albums that pre-date the encyclopedia.
This 1975 collection is an excellent anthology for those who want to know why New Yorker cartoons became the gold standard for single panel cartoons. Paperback copies can be found on Abebooks for under $5.00.
There’ve been several Albums since, keeping us updated on additions to the cartoon department’s stable. The 75th Anniversary Cartoon Collection is a worth seeking out.
Never assume anything, but I’m hoping there’ll be a 100th Anniversary Album for 2025. That would bring us well into the Emma Allen* era of cartoon editorship.
*The New Yorker‘s cartoon editor since the Spring of 2017.
