Tis A Puzzlement!
The Spill‘s good friend, the illustrator Tom Bloom has sent in a scan of a bookplate he found affixed to a copy of Robert Benchley’s Beside Himself. I’m posting it in hope a Spill reader will be able to shed some light on Mary E. Hemenway and her fascinating bookplate.
You’ll notice Otto Soglow’s Little King makes an appearance as well as a Helen Hokinson drawing. Mr. Bloom correctly IDed the caption as, “I don’t think he’s even trying.” The drawing appeared in The New Yorker December 26, 1936.
Gluyas Williams inscribed the book to “Hemmy” and added what I believe is a clue: “Who, I understand, knows all about caricatures…”

A Couple Of Cartoon Collections
Attempted Bloggery, a Spill fave blog, takes a look at a Cartoon Bank New Yorker cartoon collection from 2004 (and one from 2003).
As I’m a fan of these made-to-order collections (the Spill library has a number of them) it’s fun to see a couple in the limelight. I hope Stephen Nadler, the person behind the Attempted Bloggery curtain, does more posts about these terrif themed books. Also of interest in the AB’s post is its singling out of Aaron Bacall, a Spill One Clubber.
