Fave Photo Of The Week: Edward Sorel Gets His Reuben
Here’s a fun photo taken this past Friday of National Cartoonists Society President (and New Yorker cartoonist), Jason Chatfield presenting Edward Sorel with his Reuben Award for Cartoonist Of The Year.

A Merle Nacht Original
Amblin’ through Ebay this morning I came upon the Merle Nacht piece you see here (if you want more information on the piece, go to Ebay and type in “Merle Nacht”). I’ve always loved her work, both her New Yorker covers and “spots.” I like her name too — one of those names that fits so well with the work. All my years of taking German way back in high school and college led me to take a stab at translation: “nacht” means “night.” I hope that’s right.
Here’s an interesting interview with Ms. Nacht that appeared earlier this year on the occasion of an exhibit of her work held to celebrate her 75th birthday. It includes her first visit to The New Yorker‘s offices (back when they were at 25 West 43rd St), meeting then-art editor, Lee Lorenz, and how her first cover came about, the beauty I’m showing here.
Ms. Nacht’s website is a lot of fun. Reading through you’ll find that she (actually her husband) has kept an accurate count of her New Yorker work, such as #s of spot appearances. I’m a fan of anyone who keeps track of their New Yorker history.
