The New Yorker’s First Modern Meta Cartoon

It only took a decade to add the below gem by Joe Duffy to the Spill‘s cartoon collection. It was published in The New Yorker issue of October 31, 2011)  I believe it to be The New Yorker‘s first modern meta drawing.* There’ve been just a few since (for instance: I had one back in The New Yorker in April of  2016).

— My sincere thanks to my colleague for sending this wonderful drawing my way.

See more of J.C. Duffy’s work here.

*Correction:  in an earlier version of today’s post I identified Mr. Duffy’s cartoon as the first New Yorker meta drawing. That was inaccurate. Stephen Nadler of Attempted Bloggery, identified and wrote about the first meta New Yorker cartoon (by Gardner Rea in the issue of May 2, 1925) in his post of May 3, 2015.  Read it here (scroll down to the drawing you see below).

Swann‘s Illustration catalog has been posted.  As usual there are a number of interesting pieces by New Yorker cartoonists. Headliners this time around include Steinberg, Charles Addams, and William Steig. New Yorker covers sprinkled among the cartoons include a really nice Getz, a Lorenz, and an Alajalov (the auction is June 24th). See all the work here.
