An Algonquin Grouping
I thought it would be fun, on this (finally) not scorching hot morning, to gather some Algonquin Round Table related books off the shelves, and bring them together for a group photo along with a couple of original portraits (that’s The New Yorker’s founder and first editor, Harold Ross, as drawn by Garrett Price on the left; on the right is Alexander Woollcott as drawn by Art Young. It appears in Art Young: His Life and Times, published in 1939).
The books, from left to right: The Dutch Treat Yearbook: 1925, privately printed, 1925. Contains all sorts of yearbooky things: short humorous pieces, songs, drawings (Rea Irvin and Wallace Morgan among the contributors) A list of the membership at the end of the book includes several Round Tablers.
The Vicious Circle by Margaret Case Harriman; F.P.A.: The Life and Times Of Franklin Pierce Adams, a biography of F.P.A. by Sally Ashley; While Rome Burns — a wide-ranging collection of pieces by Mr. Woollcott; A. Woollcott, a biography of Woollcott by Samuel Hopkins Adams; The Time Of Laughter: A Sentimental Chronicle Of the Twenties — The Humor and the Humorists by Corey Ford; Ross and The New Yorker by Dale Kramer; George S. Kaufman: an Intimate Portrait; Two Robert Benchley collections: Inside Benchley, and Chips Off The Old Benchley; Sunset Gun, by Dorothy Parker — a collection of verse by Ms. Parker; Nods and Becks, by F.P.A.; Tales Of A Wayward Inn, by Frank Case (the “Inn” is the Algonquin. Mr. Case owned the hotel back in the Round Table days).
If you haven’t read any of these, a good starting point, to get the lay of the land, is Ms. Harriman’s The Vicious Circle, followed by Mr. Ford’s Time of Laughter.
