The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: Nuts
The Cartoonists:
Eighteen cartoons, eighteen cartoonists (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist. There’s one duo in this issue that we know of: Sophie Lucido Johnson and Sammi Skolmoski). There’s also a newbie, Teresa Wong, who is the 17th addition to the cartoonist stable this year, and the 98th cartoonist brought in during New Yorker cartoon editor Emma Allen’s watch, begun in the Spring of 2017.
The Cartoons:
Among the drawings in this issue that caught my eye: Liana Finck’s crosswalk signage, Joe Dator’s take on Norman Rockwell’s classic Thanksgiving dinner, P.C. Vey’s UFO drawing (I’m a sucker for UFO cartoons), and Zach Kanin’s talking pumpkin at a bar. Thought the caption for the aforementioned Teresa Wong drawing was terrif. Mike Twohy’s reclining rats, so good(!) as is Roz Chast’s cheese selection and William Haefeli’s warm laptop drawing.
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
The above heading was removed in the Spring of 2017 and replaced by — gasp! — a redrawn version. It continues to be the hope here that the iconic heading by Rea Irvin will be brought back. If you listened to the Cartoon Caption Contest Podcast last week you would have heard one of the hosts, Paul Nesja, bring up the Spill’s Irvin Talk heading campaign, and my response.
