Monday Tilley Watch: The New Yorker Issue Of July 4, 2022

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: Holiday scene

Cartoonists & Cartoons: Paul Noth, Suerynn Lee, Lonnie Millsap, Sarah Kempa, Zachary Kanin, Navied Mahdavian, Kim Warp, Roz Chast, Lars Kenseth, George Booth, Edward Koren, Julia Suits, Will McPhail

Thirteen cartoons, fourteen cartoonists (Ed Steed has a “Sketchbook”). I’m unable to access the digital issue this morning so my survey of the cartoons is not as “organic” as usual (meaning I’m   seeing them in a slideshow and not as they appear in the magazine). It’s always preferable to see them as they appear in print, how they sit on the page, how they look cohabiting the page with Rea Irvin’s typeface (the typeface was adapted by Irvin, with permission, from Allen Lewis, who created it).

How fantastic that two of the magazine’s longest active contributors — and two of the greatest New Yorker artists of all-time — appear in this issue (and back-to-back at that). The longest active contributor is Edward Koren, who is celebrating his 60th year(!) of contributing to The New Yorker. Along with him is George Booth, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in 1969.

Please note: Ink Spill celebrated Mr. Koren’s 60th anniversary with this interview.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch

I’m going to take a wild guess that Rea Irvin’s perfect Talk heading (shown below) is not atop the new issue’s Talk Of The Town. Won’t know for sure until I can see the digital issue, or until the print issue arrives later this week.
