Monday Tilley Watch: The New Yorker Issue Of August 16, 2021: The Latest ToonStack… “Face Off”: The Latest Cartoon Pad With Guest Jessica Ziegler

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: The beach…and mom

The Cartoonists:

The Cartoons:

Thirteen cartoons, fourteen cartoonists (Roz Chast has the cover). No newbies, no duos that we know of.

Noted that there’s a drawing by birthday boy, Sam Gross  — he turned 88 two days ago.  Mr. Gross is 5th in the active New Yorker cartoonists contributors list.

Here are the top five along with the date of the issue bearing their first New Yorker cartoon:

  1. Edward Koren… May 26, 1962

2. Mort Gerberg… April 10, 1965

3. Edward Frascino… September 4, 1965

4. George Booth… June 14, 1969

 5. Sam Gross… August 23, 1969

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch:

The above iconic Talk masthead by Rea Irvin was replaced by (gasp!) a redraw in the Spring of 2017. Read about it here.

The latest Cartoon Pad with hosts New Yorker cartoonists Bob Eckstein & Michael Shaw features Jessica Ziegler, the marketing director of Cartoon Stock, a commercial site that licenses cartoons. She’s also the daughter of the late very great New Yorker cartoonist, Jack Ziegler.
