Monday Tilley Watch…The New Yorker Issue Of May 22, 2023

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: Debris caught in bare tree branches. (To me) the cover seems more like something that would appear in the Fall. Just sayin’.

The Cartoonists And Cartoons:

Seventeen cartoonists, seventeen cartoons. No newbies; one duo (in the caption contest). If there are others, they’re keeping it to themselves.

Of note in this week’s roster of cartoonists:

The lead cartoon is by by Sam Gross, who passed away on May 6th; his death is mentioned on the “Contributors” page (the magazine paid further tribute to him last week in an online piece by The New Yorker‘s cartoon editor, Emma Allen. Read it here).

There is a drawing — given just the right space on the page! — by the great Jack Ziegler, who passed away six years ago. (Read the Spill‘s October 2016 two part interview with Jack here).

Andy Friedman, has a drawing. In the somewhat distant past, Mr. Friedman was sometimes known as Larry Hat.

The longest active contributor in the issue is the terrific Edward Frascino, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of September 4, 1965. In the list of longest active contributors, Mr. Frascino is second only to Mort Gerberg — their debuts are separated by six months. Read the Ink Spill interview with Mr. Frascino here

The Caption Contest Cartoonists: Pia Guerra & Ian Boothby, Lonnie Millsap, Mort Gerberg.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

Regular Spill readers are used to seeing this section end the Monday Tilley Watch. It’s my way of throwing a spotlight on Mr. Irvin’s classic Talk design (a redraw has been used in its place in the magazine since 2017). The hope is that one day, some day, this iconic graphic will be returned its proper place. Read more here.
