Seeing “Married To Comics”

On my wish list of things I’d like to exist: more films focused on the personal and working lives of cartoonists.  American Splendor and Crumb come readily to mind as models. Now I’ll add another to my go-to list: Married To Comics, a documentary about a married cartoonist couple, Carol Tyler and Justin Green (a dynamic I can relate to).

What we are shown of the relationship of these two acclaimed cartoonists is both fascinating, and often heartbreaking. The film’s narrative concerning the “underground” cartooning landscape is deepened by, among others, the on-screen appearance of Trina Robbins, Art Spiegelman (himself the focus of a documentary in the making), and Robert Crumb. The footage of Mr. Crumb’s visit to Ms. Tyler’s home following her husband’s death (in April of 2022) is especially moving.
