Cartoons:
Eighteen cartoons, eighteen cartoonists (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist. There are two duos this issue: Kaamran Hafeez & Al Batt, and Pia Guerra & Ian Boothby). No newbies. See all the cartoons here.
Sam Gross, the magazine’s 5th longest active contributing artist continues his streak of appearances with a terrif man on the mountain drawing (page 58).
An unintended nod (?) to olden times with Paul Karasik’s drawing featuring a Western Electric early 1900s phone followed by Liana’s Finck’s unicyclist.
Kate Curtis’s fun orchestra drawing (page 75) has caused the Spill Cartoon Spotlight to be turned on.
Don’t know about you, but the first thing I thought about after that first rush of enjoying this drawing was the classic Charles Addams New Yorker drawing of December 5, 1977. As we would expect from Addams, his drawing of the orchestra member about operate a plunger detonator employs the patented Addams edginess. When Curtis’s orchestra member pops his bag, it will only startle.
The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch
Sadly, you won’t see the above iconic Rea Irvin Talk Of The Town masthead when you open this week’s New Yorker. In fact, you haven’t seen it since the Spring of 2017 (the May 17th issue to be exact). It was replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. Read about it here.
