A 1939 Thumbnail Bio Of John Held, Jr.
Years ago, during my research for the Peter Arno biography, I discovered Chuck Thorndike’s The Business Of Cartooning (The House Of Little Books, 1939). It contains mini-bios of various cartoonists (along with self portraits) of such New Yorker cartoon gods as William Steig, Helen Hokinson, Barbara Shermund, and John Held, Jr.. I thought it would be fun to show one of these these mini-bios every so often. Here’s Mr. Held’s (and below it is the Spill’s Held A-Z entry).
From the A-Z:
John Held Jr (Photo source: Sketchbook of American Humorists, 1938) Born, January 10, 1889, Salt Lake City, Utah. Died, 1958, Belmar, New Jersey. New Yorker work: April 11, 1925 – Sept. 17, 1932.
Essential reading: John Held, Jr: Illustrator Of The Jazz Age by Shelly Armitage (Syracuse University Press, 1987)
