Ads Using Cartoons In A 1948 Issue Of The New Yorker
I noticed, while browsing through The New Yorker issue of December 4, 1948, a number of ads using art from James Thurber, Helen Hokinson, Otto Soglow, and William Steig. Heavy usage, in advertising, of the magazine’s artists was, back then, not unusual. Each of these artists also had drawings in the issue (also not unusual back then as each was a star contributor).
Otto Soglow’s the clear winner in this issue, with three ads; Helen Hokinson possibly tied for 2nd place with Steig (the Steig-like drawing for the Mont Tremblant Lodge is unsigned). Thurber’s in 3rd place with an ad featuring his famous seal.
