Cover Revealed For Edward Sorel’s Memoir, “Profusely Illustrated”

Looking forward to Edward Sorel’s memoir, out this Fall from Knopf. Having had the opportunity to read an early draft, I can say we’re in for a treat!

Edward Sorel’s entry on the Spill’s A-Z:

Edward Sorel (self-portrait above from a strip appearing in The Nation following the death of Marlene Dietrich. Drawing used by permission of Mr. Sorel)Born 1929. New Yorker work: 1990 – . All of Mr. Sorel’s books are of great interest; Unauthorized Portraits (Alfred A. Knopf, 1997) is particularly essential. Website: edwardsorel.net

Just In: An Advance Copy of “Send Help! A Collection Of Marooned Cartoons”

The above arrived via a late-in-the-day delivery, and as you can see it’s already on its way to being well-thumbed. 119 cartoonists* weigh in (wade in?) on the desert island scenario. Congrats to editors Ellis Rosen & Jon Adams!

Send Help! A Collection OF Marooned Cartoons (Voracious/Little Brown) will be available November 9, 2021.

*full disclosure: I’m one of the 119 cartoonists

A 1988 Charles Saxon Monograph

Dipping into one of the boxes of materials recently donated to the Spill, I came across this wonderful monograph, Charles Saxon: Sketches & Drawings, printed in December of 1988 by Robert M. Jones at The Glad Hand Press in Stamford, Connecticut. There were 70 copies printed. The text is by Mr. Jones (I’m not showing all of it here, nor am I showing all of the drawings).

— My thanks to the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous

Here’s Charles Saxon’s entry on the Spill’s A-Z:

Charles Saxon (self portrait from Best Cartoons of the Year 1947) Born in Brooklyn, November 13, 1920, died in Stamford, Conn., December 6, 1988. New Yorker work: 1943 – 1991 (2 drawings published posthumously). Key collection: One Man’s Fancy ( Dodd, Mead, 1977). One of the giants of the New Yorker’s stable of artists. He could do it all: covers, spreads, single panels.
