Herblock In The New Yorker? Say It Ain’t So, Joe (Dator)

Last night, The Spill received an email from the fab New Yorker cartoonist, Joe Dator that spirited this cartoonist away for awhile from watching political coverage. Here’s Mr. Dator’s email, almost in its entirety. My thanks to Mr. Dator for allowing The Spill to share it:

I thought you’d be interested to learn that I solved a little mystery that’s been nagging at me. Every so often, this Herblock cartoon goes viral all over again, for obvious reasons, and it’s almost always erroneously identified as a New Yorker cartoon (sometimes accompanied by a cockamamie story about The Washington Post refusing to run it and The New Yorker picking it up instead).

I knew it couldn’t have been in The New Yorker of “May 31, 1974” because there was no such issue, and obviously The New Yorker would never print a caption at the top, and oh yeah, there’s also the tiny little detail that no Herblock cartoon ever ran in The New Yorker.

I finally tracked down proof that it was actually in The Washington Post, on May 3rd, 1974. See attached for examples of the wrong attribution, and for the right one.

Swann’s January Illustration Auction

Swann Illustration auction catalogs are always fun to browse through online.  The upcoming auction (January 28th) is no exception. It includes work by New Yorker contributors (but not always their New Yorker work) John Held, Jr., Lee Lorenz, Frank Modell, Barry Blitt, Robert Grossman, Roz Chast, Rick Meyerowitz, Barbara Shermund, Jules Feiffer, Alajalov, Robert Censoni, George Price, Arthur Getz, and Charles Addams. Mr. Addams one piece is, as usual, expected to go for big bucks (relatively speaking). One of my favorite pieces in the auction is the Garrett Price cover submission shown above. I know almost nothing about golf, but I know a beautiful piece of work when I see one.

— My thanks to Stephen Nadler of Attempted Bloggery for bringing the new catalog to my attention.

A Note About The Spill’s A-Z

Visitors to the Spill‘s New Yorker Cartoonists A-Z will find a couple of new “buttons”: Cartoonists A-M, and Cartoonists N-Z. The A-Z as one long list had become too unwieldy for my computer to handle and so the list has been been split in two.
