The Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of March 29, 2021

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: It’s “The Style & Design Issue”…so a designy cover.

The Cartoonists:

Twelve cartoonists, twelve cartoons; one newbie, Yasin Osman, who is the 6th addition to The New Yorker‘s cartoonist stable this year, and the 84th addition since Emma Allen became the magazine’s cartoon editor in the Spring of 2017. No collaborating duos this week (that we know of).

The Cartoons: Even though this is the Style & Design Issue, it might also be called the Style & Design & Animals Issue. It begins with Amy Hwang’s fun cat cartoon (it’s part of an ad for Ken Burns & Lynn Novick’s Hemingway film), and ends on the Caption Contest page with P.C. Vey’s rabbit and Joe Dator’s snail. In between there’s a talking cuckoo bird by Johnny DiNapoli, a driving dog by Joe Dator, a talking horse by Ed Steed, a napping cat by Harry Bliss, and a Teresa Burns Parkhurst cat on a couch (or is it a dog — hard to tell on the digital issue version. I’ll clarify once the print magazine arrives). Heck, there’s even a jackal in the Sketchpad piece, and a dog(?) in the very last “spot” drawing.

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch:

In the Spring of 2017, a redraw replaced Rea Irvin’s classic Talk masthead (above). I was hoping — admittedly a faint hope — that Mr. Irvin’s spectacular design would return, this being the Style & Design Issue and all. But noooooo.  Read about it here.

…and speaking of Rea Irvin, you might notice that the bylines in this issue are not in The New Yorker’s iconic “Irvin Typeface”…here’s an example:

“By Jill Lepore” is not the Irvin typeface. Using non-Irvin typeface in New Yorker pieces seems a bit like placing a pom-pom on a top hat.
