Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of September 13, 2021

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: The second embracing couple cover of the year, this one tied into 9/11.

The Cartoonists:

Twenty cartoons, twenty-one cartoonists. The twenty-first is Ed Steed who takes care of Spot drawing duties in this week’s issue. The Spill counts duo efforts as one cartoonist; there are two duos in this issue (that we know of): Joseph Dottino & Alex Pearson, and Sophie Lucido Johnson & Sammi Skolmoski. No newbies in the issue.

The Cartoons:

Nice to see a Marisa Acocella drawing. It’s also noteworthy that in the last four “regular” issues (i.e., not including last week’s “archival” issue) there have been three Sam Gross drawings. What a treat! Mr. Gross is The New Yorker‘s current fifth longest contributing artist, right after Edward Koren (whose first New Yorker cartoon appeared May 26, 1962), Mort Gerberg April 10, 1965), Edward Frascino (Sept. 4, 1965), and George Booth (June 14, 1969). Mr. Gross’s first New Yorker drawing appeared August 23, 1969.

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch

The above design by the great Rea Irvin was ditched in the Spring of 2017 for a — gasp! — redraw.  Read all about it.
