The Cover: Kadir Nelson‘s cover celebrates the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Negro leagues. A Q&A with him here.
The Cartoonists:
The Cartoons:
Fourteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists (Barry Blitt is the fifteenth, with a “Sketchbook”). The lead off cartoon is by one of our veteran cartoonists, Ed Frascino, who began contributing to The New Yorker in 1965. Be sure to check out his fab collection, published by Penguin in 1983:
A drawing (it’s on page 30) by another long-time contributor caught my eye. Mike Twohy, who began contributing in 1980, has a great addition to the cache of New Yorker mouse-themed cartoons.
On page 26 is a horse and ice cream cone gem by Lars Kenseth (you don’t see horse and ice cream cone cartoons very often…if ever. A first perhaps?).  Another hit this week is Zach Kanin‘s moving day drawing (page 33). Jeremy Nguyen‘s terrif drawing (page 44) gives us a foreshadowing of theater-going life (at least the cartoon version of it).

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch
In the Spring of 2017 the classic design (shown below) by Rea Irvin was replaced by a redraw(!). Let’s hope the real thing is returned someday. Read all about it here.
