The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: Chilly.
The Cartoonists & Cartoons:
Twelve cartoons, thirteen cartoonists (Ed Steed has a Sketchbook). One duo, that we know of: Sophie Lucido Johnson and Sammi Skolmoski. The Spill counts duos as one cartoonist. No newbies in the issue.
The longest active contributor in this issue is P.C. Vey, who began contributing to The New Yorker in 1993; the most recent contributor is Asher Perlman, whose first drawing appeared in the issue of June 7, 2021.
Two drawings that caught my eye this week (both are “period pieces”): Paul Karasik‘s Robin Hood drawing on page 29, and Julia Suits delivery drawing on page 23 (how I wish this had been given more breathing room on the page). These drawings took me by surprise, causing me to set with them a spell.
Leaving my cartoonist bubble for a moment, I also enjoyed John Broadley‘s full page illustration (page 33) — it accompanies Dorothy Wickenden’s “Late Harvest” Profile. Would’ve made for a nice Fall cover.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
Well here we are post 97th anniversary issue, and still lamenting the absence of Rea Irvin’s iconic 92 year old design shown above, 86ed in the Spring of 2017 and replaced — gasp! — by a redraw. Read all about it here.
Great roundup, as per usual, but I can’t seem to find the sketchbook by Ed Steed. I even searched the website. I wonder why it isn’t showing up for me.

Hmmm…How did my drawing take you by surprise, Michael?
