The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: WPA revisited.
The Cartoonists:
Fourteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists (Ellis Rosen has a Sketchpad). One duo effort that we know of…the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist. One newbie (with a fun debut): Asher Perlman, who is the 9th addition to the magazine’s stable this year and the 87th newbie under cartoon editor, Emma Allen’s watch.
The Cartoons:
A stand-out cartoon from David Borchart (it’s on page 34). Mr. Borchart began contributing to the magazine in 2007. One tiny quibble: great drawings, such as this, deserve more space on the page.
Especially fond of Lars Kenseth’s halo drawing (page 43). Its simplicity (both drawing + caption) is admirable.
In Three Stooges technical lingo, a graphic coinky-dink, and something I don’t recall ever seeing before in The New Yorker: a cartoon (by Juan Astasio) and an illustration (by Angie Wang) graphically mirroring each other.
