The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: Flavors of Mondrian, Parcheesi, and Ware?
The Cartoonists:
Seventeen cartoons, seventeen cartoonists. No duos (that we know of). One newbie, Zareen Choudhury, the 4th new cartoonist to enter The New Yorker’s stable this new year, and the 104th brought in under Emma Allen’s cartoon editorship, begun in May of 2017. Roz Chast is the longest active cartoonist contributor in this issue, first published in The New Yorker, July 3, 1978.
The Cartoons:
Anyone who has parked on a New York City street then gotten out their car to check (and often puzzle over) the nearest parking sign will appreciate Robert Leighton‘s drawing in this new issue (it’s on page 15). I usually don’t mention the Spots artist on the Spill unless they are a cartoonist, but I think that this week’s striped shirt Spots, by Agathe Sorlet, are charming.
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch
The above, designed and drawn by the late great Rea Irvin, was 86ed from its berth after 92 years and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. Here’s hoping someone sees the wisdom of returning the original. Read more here.
