Latest Addition To The Spill Library
This 78 year old bound volume, holding New Yorker issues from November 25, 1944 through February 10, 1945, once belonged to the Tulsa Public Library. I’m sorry it’s no longer there (I’m a fan of libraries that hold onto their bound volumes), but happy it made its way to the Spill library this week. As you would expect, much of the content (writing, cartoons, ads) refers to the ongoing war.
Among the many treasures in this volume is Saul Steinberg’s very first New Yorker cover (the issue of January 13, 1945)…his first New Yorker cartoon was published in the issue of October 25, 1941.
The very first thing I opened to in the volume was a funny piece in the issue of February 10, 1945 by E.B. White, which, I’ll admit, I don’t think I ever read before:
It sits right across from a full page drawing by Richard Taylor:
I could go through each of the issues in this volume and show the work, but that might get me into hot water with Conde Nast. I’m hoping the reader has access to The New Yorker‘s complete online digital archive either through your local library or on your computer if you’re a subscriber. Or maybe you have these issues.
Here’re just two Spot drawings I found (both in the January 6, 1945 issue). This charming Thurber drawing:
and this small Spot from Chon Day:
Finally, from the December 16, 1944 issue the magazine’s traditional holiday list of books from its contributors. What a crew, including Dorothy Parker, A.J. Liebling, Margaret Case Harriman, S.J. Perelman, Janet Flanner, Peter Arno, George Price, Syd Hoff, Richard Taylor, Steig, and Spot artist, Suzanne Suba (her one and only book):
