Monday Tilley Watch: The New Yorker Issue Of October 24, 2022

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: sewing

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Twenty-two cartoons, twenty-two cartoonists. Two duos, that we know of (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist). One newbie: Hilary Allison, the 21st addition to the magazine’s stadium this year, and the 122nd cartoonist brought in since May of 2017 when Emma Allen took the magazine’s cartoon editorship reins. The longest active contributing cartoonist in this issue is the great Edward Koren, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of May 26, 1962.

Number of dogs in cartoons this issue: 5 (counting the balloon dog).

Number of rabbits: 15 – 16.

Number of snails: 4

Number of sardines: 16?

Number of unicorns: 1

Number of lions: 1

Number of balconies: 2

You can see all of the issue’s cartoons here.

The Caption Contest Cartoonists: David Borchart, P.C. Vey, Paul Karasik.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

Back in May of 2017, Rea Irvin‘s perfect 92 year old Talk design (above) was carted away and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. The Spill continues to hope the real deal will return.
