The Monday Tilley Watch…The Issue Of November 28, 2022
The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: waves (it’s “The Climate Issue”)
The Cartoonists & Cartoon:
Twelve cartoons, and twelve cartoonists. Two duos, that we know of (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist). One newbie duo: Danica Novgorodoff and Michael Voll are the 27th newbies [a record number of newbies in one year] of 2022, and the 129th addition to The New Yorker‘s cartoonist stadium since Emma Allen took the cartoon editorship reins in May of 2017. The longest active contributor in this issue is Sam Gross, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of August 23, 1969.
See the issue’s cartoons here.
The New Yorker Caption Contest Cartoonists: Lonnie Millsap, Lars Kenseth, Bob Eckstein.
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
The above design by Rea Irvin, sat atop The Talk Of The Town for 92 years before being toppled in 2017 and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. The Spill hopes the real deal will one day return. Read more here.
