Monday Spill…The New Yorker Issue Of November 18, 2024; Anita Kunz’s “Original Sisters” At The Norman Rockwell Museum

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: released early last week, post-election.

The Cartoonists and Cartoons:

Eighteen cartoons, nineteen cartoonists (Barry Blitt has the cover). Two newbies: Rich North, who is the 18th cartoonist added to The New Yorker‘s cartoonist colosseum this year, and the 162nd cartoonist brought in since Emma Allen was appointed the magazine’s cartoon editor in the Spring of 2017, and Chris Gural who is the 19th cartoonist added this year, and the 163rd since the spring of 2017.

The longest active cartoonist contributor in the issue is this cartoonist.

This week’s cartoons.

The Caption Contest Cartoonist: Lonnie Millsap

This week’s contest.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

Counting down to the 100 Anniversary issue of The New Yorker with approximately a dozen issues to go, the sense here is that Rea Irvin’s classic Talk design, shown above, may stay in mothballs.* I’d be overjoyed to be wrong about this. We’ll see what we see when we get there.

*Back in May of 2017 Mr. Irvin’s classic design was replaced by — if you can believe it — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator. The Spill has been hoping (against hope) ever since that Mr. Irvin’s work will return.

Anita Kunz’s “Original Sisters” Exhibit At The Norman Rockwell Museum

Late Saturday afternoon, Liza Donnelly and I hopped in the car, and drove north to Stockbridge, Massachusetts to attend the opening of the Anita Kunz exhibit, “Original Sisters: Portraits of Tenacity and Courage.” The event began with a conversation between Ms. Kunz and the celebrated book designer, Chip Kidd. Following that, the overflow crowd streamed into the galleries where

Ms. Kunz’s paintings filled several rooms. Most of the exhibit is dedicated to the Original Sisters portraits, but there is one room devoted to her New Yorker covers as well as illustrations for various publications.

On hand for the opening were a number of bold text names from the illustration world including Seymour Chwast, John Cuneo, Barry Blitt, Gayle Kabaker, Steve Brodner, Peter De Seve, Nora Krug, Steven Guarnaccia, Joe Ciardiello, Steven Heller, and Dale Stephanos.
