A 1972 Cartoon Collection
Here’s a paperback cartoon collection I’d never seen until yesterday. Lee Lorenz, the late great New Yorker artist and art/cartoon editor, provided the cover drawing. The scans come to us via a good friend of the Spill, Steve Stoliar. My thanks to him for sharing.
Published in 1972, by Dell, with “all funds realized from the sale” going to the National Peace Action Coalition, the book was edited by Bill Lee (a cartoonist himself, and one-time cartoon editor for Penthouse and Omni magazines). The introduction is by Jules Feiffer (who needs no introduction here). The Foreword is by Ron Wolin, who I remember well as one of the top dogs at the Cartoonist Guild (a now defunct organization for professional cartoonists. It was responsible for several cartoon books, all worthy of picking up. Here’s one, and here’s another).
While the book is interesting enough all by its lonesome, Mr. Stoliar’s copy, as you see below, carries numerous signatures, many of them New Yorker contributors: Frank Modell, Sam Gross, Peter Porges, Mort Gerberg, Stuart Leeds, Dick Oldden, Sid Harris, Charles. E. Martin, Lou Myers, David Pascal, and the one-and-only George Booth.
More New Yorker folks show up listed on the back cover: R.O.Blechman, Eldon Dedini, Boris Drucker, Herbert Goldberg, Bud Handelsman, B. Kliban (an Ink Spill One Clubber!), Edward Koren, Henry Martin, Al Ross, Brian Savage, Saul Steinberg, Barney Tobey, and Bill Woodman.
