Monday Spill, The New Yorker Issue Of September 29, 2025

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

Note: as with last week, The New Yorker‘s digital issue, usually posted at 6:00 AM, has not yet been posted (as of 7:00 AM), so I’m forging ahead with this look at the new issue by using a listing of the magazine’s contents, rather than seeing the published Table Of Contents. If I’ve missed something, I’ll correct it once the digital issue is posted.

The Cartoonists and Cartoons

Thirteen cartoons, fourteen cartoonists (Barry Blitt has the cover). No duos, that we know of. Three newbies: Lauren Simkin Berke, Joline Jourdain, and Olivia Noble (sorry, Im unable to locate a website for Olivia Noble. Would appreciate a link from anyone in the know). They are the 8th, 9th, and 10th additions to the magazine’s cartoon colosseum this year, and the 173rd, 174th, and 175th cartoonists brought in since Emma Allen took the cartoon editorship reins in May of 2017.

Always terrif to see a drawing by the late, exceptionally great, Edward Koren.

The longest active contributing cartoonist in the issue is this cartoonist (I began contributing in 1977).

This week’s cartoons.

This week’s Cartoon Caption contest (Lynn Hsu contributes the contest drawing).

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch

Eight years ago the above perfect Rea Irvin Talk design (shown here) was abandoned and replaced by  — if you can believe it! — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator. The Spill continues to hold out hope that Mr. Irvin’s work returns. Read more here.
