The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: For yet another “Archival Issue” (“Comedy” is the theme) the magazine is re-running a classic Charles Addams cover that originally appeared February 2, 1963.
The Cartoonists and Cartoons:
Nine (new) cartoons, ten cartoonists (Mr. Addams has the cover). One duo, that we know of. No newbies. The longest active cartoonist in the issue is Roz Chast, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in July of 1978.
Note: The New Yorker‘s Cartoon Editor, Emma Allen, writes in The Talk Of The Town about “what’s actually funny.”
The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonist: Ben Schwartz
This week’s contest (#909, for those keeping track).
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
Since it’s the “Comedy Issue,” wouldn’t it have been a hoot to bring back Rea Irvin’s classic Talk design (shown above) that disappeared in May of 2017. No need to answer — it was a rhetorical question.
