A Syd Hoff Mural In A (Former) Greenwich Village Speakeasy
This morning while watching a short 1964 documentary, The Village, I was happily surprised to see, at the 18 minute mark, a Syd Hoff mural appear. The moment — and it is just a moment — takes place during a visit to The Downtown, a former speakeasy at One Sheridan Square.
Mr. Hoff’s niece, Carol Edmonston, who runs the official Syd Hoff website, wrote about the piece here, in “The Mystery Of The Mural.” The missing mural, according to Ms. Edmonston, sold at a yard sale long ago, after hanging in a private home. The whereabouts of the art is currently unknown.
