The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: Anthony Russo delivers a wonderful cover for this first issue of the new year (a double issue).
The Cartoonists & Cartoons:
Twenty cartoons, twenty cartoonists (the Spill counts duo efforts as one cartoonist).
Duos: There’s one duo that we know of this week: Sophie Lucido Johnson and Sammi Skolmoski).
Newbies: There are two newbies: Ken Levine and Sarah Kempa (whose work has been appearing online at newyorker.com for some time). They are the 1st and 2nd newbies of 2022, and the 101st and 102nd new cartoonists brought into the magazine’s stable under Emma Allen’s editorship begun in May of 2017.
As promised in the Monday Tilley Watch of December 20th, the new year begins with an accounting of the newest contributor or contributors (such as is the case this week) and the longest active cartoonist contributor in the issue (that would be me).
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch
Sadly, you won’t see the above in the first issue of the new year. Rea Irvin’s iconic design graced The New Yorker‘s Talk Of The Town page for 92 before being replaced by — gasp! — a redraw in the Spring of 2017. The Spill continues to hope that the magazine’s design tweakers return Mr. Irvin’s design. More here about Irvin’s “mere reassuring blur.”

The Daily Cartoon, the Week of December 20th 24th: Jon Adams, Kim Warp, Asher Perlman, Maggie Larson (a Bonus Daily), Tom Chitty, Zoe Si.
Daily Shouts, the week of December 20th-24th: Eugenia Viti, Zoe Si (with Irving Ruan),
and …Barry Blitt’s Kvetchbook: “Not-So-Frosty The Snowman”

Michael,
Thanks for the mention. Getting my first cartoon in TNY is an absolute thrill. Being mentioned in your blog really makes me feel part of the club. Happy New Year and thanks again.
