The Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of January 4, 2021

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: A rather somber street scene by Jorge Colombo (I wonder if the title, “Bright Lights” is meant to be ironic). Read a Q&A with the artist here.

The Cartoonists:

Seventeen cartoons and seventeen cartoonists. Seeing the George Booth drawing made me smile (even before reading the caption). One team effort this week: Julia Leigh and Phillip Day (the Spill counts teams as one cartoonist). This week’s newbie: Ozge Samanci, who is the first new cartoonist added to the magazine’s stable in 2021, and the 79th newbie under cartoon editor Emma Allen, who took the department’s reins in the Spring of 2017.

The Cartoons:

I’ve always thought of the first issue of the new year as a sort of hybrid: although it carries the date of the new year, it arrives in the old year, in the post-Christmas week leading to New Year’s Day.   While one expects to see at least one post-Christmas drawing, this issue seems to have a Christmas day drawing of Mrs. Santa opening a present (unless Santa has waited to give his gift upon his return to the North Pole after his big sledding ’round the world day), and a pre-Christmas drawing of Christmas cards arriving while the tree is still being decorated. There is one drawing that hits the big event of the week target (that would be New Year’s Eve): Emily Flake’s line of people ready to take a whack at the Times Square ball (unfortunately, due to the pandemic, people will not be allowed in Times Square this year to witness the ball drop).

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch:

Mr. Irvin‘s classic design is still mothballed. Read about it here (and take a look at it below).
