It’s Just A Coffee Mug…Right?
Yesterday I came across a New Yorker ad for a coffee mug. This is the ad:
Funny (to me) that it’s called the “Irvin Edition.” Funny because the work you see on the mug was not drawn by Rea Irvin. It is a redrawn version of Rea Irvin’s iconic design, facilitated in 2017 by a contemporary illustrator, Christoph Niemann. The ad copy goes on to say:
“This mug features that sections banner, originally sketched by the magazine’s first art editor, Rea Irvin…”
A suggested more accurate description:
“This mug features that sections banner, reimagined and redrawn in 2017 by Christoph Niemann, based on the original design drawn by the magazine’s first art editor, Rea Irvin, …”
