Monday’s Spill: Happy Birthday, Edward Koren!; The Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of December 20, 2021

Happy Birthday, Edward Koren!

A very happy birthday to Edward Koren, born on this day in 1935. Ed, one of The New Yorker’s cartoon gods, is an all around terrific person.

He is the longest active New Yorker contributing cartoonist — his first drawing appeared in the issue of May 26, 1962. Above are three favorite Koren cartoon collections — all must-haves for any New Yorker cartoon library.

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: A tree with all the packaging.

The Cartoonists:

It is often pointed out on the Monday Tilley Watch who the longest contributing cartoonist is in that particular week’s brand new issue. Beginning in the new year this will be regularly noted on the Monday Tilley Watch. It will also be noted who the newest contributor is.

The Cartoons:

Fifteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists. No duos (that we know of) and no newbies.

Next week will be a double issue — the last issue of 2021, and the first of 2022. I believe — although I’m not 100% sure — it will be the Cartoon Issue. That’ll be interesting.

The Irvin Talk Watch

The above Talk heading by Rea Irvin ran for 92 years before getting the ol’ heave-ho and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw in the Spring of 2017.  Read more here.

  1. Thanks for using my Ed picture! I LOVED that one. I’d taken a couple in the hotel room, then asked him if he could do that with his hand, just so I could catch the ink-stained fingernails in the photo. What a legend that guy is…
