The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: lotsa primary colors
The Cartoonists and Cartoons:
Sixteen cartoons, sixteen cartoonists. Two duos, that we know of (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist). No newbies.
The longest active cartoonist contributor in this issue is Liza Donnelly, whose first New Yorker cartoon appeared in the issue of June 21, 1982.
The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonist: Yinfan Huang
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
As we near the 100th anniversary of Harold Ross’s “comic weekly” there’s an unease here at the Spill about the possibility of never again seeing Rea Irvin’s Talk design (shown here) sit in the place it once sat for 92 years. I think of one of the political catchphrases we’re hearing these days, “we’re not going back,” and wonder if this is the thinking that has settled into the minds of those responsible for “tinkering” with the magazine’s design.
