The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: fear.
The Cartoonists & Cartoons:
Fourteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists (Roz Chast has a “Sketchbook”). No duos, that we know of. No newbies. The longest active contributing cartoonist in the issue is this cartoonist. Number of cartoons with cats: 3
This week’s Spot artist is Marcellus Hall, a long-time New Yorker cover artist and illustrator.
The Caption Contest Cartoonists: Akeem Roberts; a caption cartoon duo: Sophie Lucido Johnson & Sammi Skolmoski; Michael Shaw.
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
In May of 2017 the above Rea Irvin design that had sat atop The Talk Of The Town for 92 years was 86ed for — gasp! — a redraw. Here we are five-and-a-half years later and the redraw still uncomfortably greets New Yorker readers. It’s never too late to bring back the real deal.
