The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Twelve cartoons, twelve cartoonists. One duo that we know of (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist). One newbie: Roland High, who is the 13th new addition to the magazine’s cartoonist stable this year, and the 113th cartoonist added since Emma Allen took The New Yorker’s cartoon editor’s reins in May of 2017. The longest active contributor in the issue is this cartoonist.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

This man is Rea Irvin. In his role as as The New Yorker‘s first & only art supervisor (some refer to him as its first art editor…a weedsy distinction) he is largely responsible for defining the graphic look of The New Yorker.

Mr. Irvin gave us Eustace Tilley, the magazine’s mascot who once upon a time showed up yearly on the anniversary issue. Mr. Irvin’s iconic design (shown above) for The Talk Of The Town, disappeared in the Spring of 2017 after sitting atop The New Yorker‘s Talk Of The Town for 92 years. It was replaced by — if you can believe it — a redraw. It’s never too late to bring back the real deal. Read more here.
