The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover:

How great it is to see a George Booth cover! In addition to the cover, there’s a special “Cover Story” this week featuring Mr. Booth’s daughter Sarah Booth interviewing her father.

Within the interview we are treated to four Booth drawings as well as a hitherto unseen (by me at least) photo of Mr. Booth in his linotype operator days in Missouri.

Mr. Booth is this week’s longest active New Yorker cartoonist contributor, with his first drawing appearing in the magazine June 14, 1969.

Here’s his entry on the Spill‘s A-Z:

George Booth (photo above taken in NYC 2016, courtesy of Liza Donnelly) Born June 28, 1926, Cainesville, MO. New Yorker work: June 14, 1969 – . Key collections: Think Good Thoughts About A Pussycat (Dodd, Mead, 1975), Rehearsal’s Off! (Dodd, Mead, 1976), Omnibooth: The Best of George Booth (Congdon & Weed, 1984), The Essential George Booth, Compiled and Edited by Lee Lorenz ( Workman, 1998).

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Seventeen cartoons, eighteen cartoonists (the eighteenth being the cover artist, George Booth). No newbies, no duos (that we know of). The newest contributor is E.S. Glenn, who began contributing September 14, 2020.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch

The above iconic Talk design by Rea Irvin was removed in May of 2017 after serving for 92 years. It was replaced by a — gasp! — redraw. The Spill continues to hope that the New Yorker shuffles the redraw off to Buffalo and returns the above. Read all about it here
