The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker
The Cover: At the beach, and on the beach.
The Cartoonists:
Fifteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists; no newbies, no duos (that we know of). Of note is the publication of a cartoon by the late Michael Crawford. It’s always a little startling to see a drawing appear (in a brand new issue) by a colleague who has moved on to the big drawing board in the sky. Mr. Crawford passed away five years ago this month.
There are a goodly number of cartoons this week that caught my eye. At the risk of leaving someone’s work out, I’ll not list them.
A side note: it would be so great to see some of the cartoons allowed more breathing room on the page. The somewhat standard (generic?) space allowed for many of the cartoons doesn’t, at times, allow us to fully appreciate the art (David Borchart’s wonderful whale drawing in this issue is a good example).
The Rea Irvin Masthead Watch
The great Rea Irvin’s iconic Talk of The town masthead design (above) has been missing since the Spring of 2017 — replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. Read about it here.
