The Cartoonists And Cartoons:

Sixteen cartoons, seventeen cartoonists (Brendan Loper has a “Sketchpad”). One duo, that we know of. No newbies. As this is a double issue, we’ll have to wait until the next new issue, out July 15th, to explore the next batch of cartoons.

Nice to see a Sam Gross cartoon (Mr. Gross passed away last year).

The longest active cartoonist contributor in the issue is Roz Chast, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of July 3, 1978.

This week’s (and next’s) cartoons.

The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonists: Drew Dernavich, Niall Maher, Liza Donnelly

This week’s (and next’s) contest.

But improving on something perfect is a tricky thing. The replacement is, alas, not a miraculously vast improvement over Mr. Irvin’s work. It is simply a constant reminder that something perfect and more original, once occupied the spot.
