Friday’s Spill: Another Big Donation To The Spill’s Archives

The generosity of friends of the Spill never fails to amaze me. A box arrived here yesterday chock full of New Yorker materials I’d never seen before.

I’m showing just a couple of items (heck, I still haven’t shown the materials that were in the last treasure trove from the same donor).

First, an array of exhibit cards (various years) from a European gallery. On heavy stock, 6″ x 8 1/4″… the Abe Birnbaum New Yorker Thanksgiving cover (published November 26, 1960) sans the magazine’s logo is a stunner.

Here’s a one-of-a-kind piece that is so great: an Arthur Getz hand drawn map to his Connecticut studio. The bottom part was obviously printed out, but he taped on extra instructions to the top of the map, in what appears to be ball point pen, and hand-colored the route in yellow.

Also in the box of wonders: a cd of what is possibly (likely!) the only audio interview ever given by the New Yorker cover artist, Suzanne Suba. If granted permission, I will transcribe the disc one of these days and present a portion of it.

Here’s Ms. Suba’s entry on the Spill‘s A-Z:

Susanne Suba Born Budapest, Hungary 1913. Died February, 2012, NYC. Ms. Suba contributed numerous “spot” drawings to The New Yorker, as well as five covers and one cartoon, published September 18, 1948. Her first cover appeared October 21, 1939, and her last, March 2, 1963. Besides her work for the magazine she was a prolific illustrator of children’s books. A collection of her spot drawings was published in 1944, Spots By Suba: From The New Yorker (E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc, NY).

And Arthur Getz’s A-Z entry:

Arthur Getz Born, Passaic, New Jersey, 1913; died, 1996. NYer work: 1938 -1988. Primarily a cover artist, he had one cartoon published: March 15, 1958. (You might say his career was a mirror image of George Price’s, who was one of the most prolific cartoonists, with over 1200 published, and one cover). According to the official Getz website, he was the most prolific of all New Yorker cover artists, having 213 appear during the fifty years he contributed to the magazine.
