A Box Of Steinberg & Steig
Around thirty years ago I thought I’d begin keeping all the issues of The New Yorker with Steinberg or Steig covers in their own box, separate from other single issues I was collecting (hoarding?). This was a very bad idea.
The biggest problem with that boxing idea is that I didn’t stick with it. After filling just one box — the one you see above — I stuck it on a shelf and rarely visited it again. Rarely visiting the box defeated the purpose of having the box, and perusing/enjoying its contents. Following that first boxing, other issues of the magazine with Steinberg/Steig covers were placed in the Spill‘s collection of single issues (shown below) — where they’re easy to find.
Yesterday afternoon I was standing in a small storage room next to Liza Donnelly’s studio, idly looking around at some of The New Yorker “stuff” there, when I saw the Steinberg/Steig box and decided to correct the misguided boxing effort of long ago. The various issues will now be placed in the organized (by year) stack of New Yorkers in the Spill archives. Altho now that I’m looking at the below photo, I’m kind’ve liking the way these older issues are gathered together. Oh my.
