Watching Someone Draw
This morning, I happened upon an Instagram video of my New Yorker colleague, Chris Weyant drawing. Even though I spend most of my work day watching drawings of my own appear on paper, I found myself in a kind of drifty zone (no snow punning intended) seeing Chris’s pen move efficiently along the page, creating a great little fellow all bundled up. I think it brought me back to childhood memories of watching Jon Nagy’s Learn To Draw television show. There’s a kind of magic when drawings develop on a blank page.
My wife, and New Yorker colleague, Liza Donnelly has, for many years, drawn live on social media; she was at it during last night’s State of the Union address, capturing moments as they happened (she once drew live while running the New York City Marathon). My New Yorker colleague, John Cuneo posts videos showing us how his beautifully intricate drawings come to be. Another colleague, Jason Chatfield, has a podcast centered around drawing live (Draw Me Anything!). I’m grateful to these folks (and others who I’m sure are out there) for sharing these moments with us.
