I had such a good time writing about some of the books by New Yorker authors on the Spill‘s shelves in yesterday’s post, I thought I’d continue today (still leaving off the “A” authors). As with yesterday’s books, these are only books by New Yorker authors, not books about them (next week, I’ll show some of the books about New Yorker contributors). As with yesterday’s books, there are going to be some New Yorker cartoonist intersections here and there.
Above, left to right: three Robert Benchley books, Inside Benchley, The Benchley Roundup, Benchley Lost and Found (all three with Gluyas Williams cover art, and illustrations). My copy of The Roundup has a homemade dust jacket; The Long Winded Lady by Maeve Brennan; nine books by Truman Capote: Other Voices, Other Rooms, The Muses Are Heard, The Grass Harp, The Dogs Bark, Selected Writings, In Cold Blood, Music For Chameleons, Answered Prayers, The Early Stories (Capote, very early on in his New Yorker career was the “art boy” responsible for placing art on an easel during art meetings); two by John Cheever: Some People, Places, & Things, Oh What A Paradise It Seems; Voices Offstage by Marc Connelly; two by Peter De Vries, Into Your Tent I’ll Creep, The Tunnel Of Love (Mr. De Vries came to The New Yorker by way of James Thurber‘s recommendation. De Vries was the magazine’s cartoon doctor for a number of years. His book, The Tunnel Of Love is about a cartoonist; This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Above, left to right: three by Joseph Mitchell: McSorley’s Wonderful Saloon, The Bottom Of The Harbor, My Ears Are Bent (My Ears Are Bent contains three terrific pre-New Yorker Mitchell pieces, on Peter Arno, Helen Hokinson, and William Steig); Family Reunion by Ogden Nash; Stories Of Frank O’Connor; two by Susan Orlean: The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup, The Library Book; three by Dorothy Parker: The Portable Dorothy Parker, Sunset Gun, Dorothy Parker Stories; Baby, It’s Cold Inside by S.J.
