Latest Addition To The Spill Cartoon Library
Through the generosity of Anatol Kovarsky‘s daughter, the Spill has been fortunate to receive a number of Mr. Kovarsky’s cartoon books and art. I may show some of the art down the road here (it’s all unpublished). But for now I’m showing this 1981 Michael ffolkes paperback (published by Unwin) that ffolkes signed to Kovarsky.
I mentioned ffolkes not long ago when a copy of ffundemental ffolkes finally came my way. It was the first ffolkes collection added to the Spill library. Now, with Rude As You Please, there are two. The content of Rude is a bit blue, and would never fly these days in most publications (perhaps it would if The National Lampoon were alive). Looking past the subject matter, I do really like the way Mr. ffolkes draws, and am looking forward to adding more of his collections to the library.
Michael ffolkes Spill A-Z entry:
Michael ffolkes Born Brian Davis, London, c.1925. Died, London, 1988. New Yorker work: 10 drawings from February 26, 1979 – June 8, 1987. According to his New York Times obit (Oct.26, 1988), ffolkes “chose the pseudonym…out of Burke’s Peerage, telling colleagues with typical wryness that it connoted illegitimacy.”
