New Addition Of An Old Edition

I love it when two New Yorker folks team up in one book, such as this latest addition to the Spill‘s library: That’s New York! (Macy-Masius, 1927 ) by writer, Morris Markey and cartoonist/illustrator, Johan Bull. Bull and Markey began contributing to the magazine in its first year.

In a 1937 letter to James Thurber, E.B. White called Markey (shown here) “The greatest living writer.”* Markey’s New York Times obit (July 12, 1945) says he “served in virtually every department” at The New Yorker from 1925- 1931. That’s New York!  is dedicated to The New Yorker‘s founder and first editor, Harold Ross, who told Markey in their first meeting, “to be honest at any cost” in his work for the magazine. The magazine’s “A Reporter At Large” title was created by Markey, replacing “Behind The News.”**

Bull’s work included 39 cartoons as well as near weekly illustrations for the Sports column. He also designed a number of column headings. Here’s his entry on the Spill‘s A-Z:

Johan Bull (photo dated 1934, courtesy of the Bull family) Born c. 1894, Oslo. Died Stowe, Vermont, Sept. 1945. New Yorker work (cartoons): July 4, 1925 – Oct. 22, 1927 .

Here are a few samples of Bull’s work from That’s New York!. First, the endpapers, then the title page, followed by an example of a chapter heading. Each chapter leads off with an illustration.
