Visiting A Collector and His Collection

A few days ago, Liza Donnelly and I drove to my home state of New Jersey to visit with Mr. Attempted Bloggery himself, Stephen Nadler. Stephen is lending work for an exhibit of New Yorker cartoon art Liza is curating for The Society of Illustrators (more on that another day). While I’ve visited a number of homes before that had plenty of cartoons hanging on the walls (Edward Koren’s home comes to mind as well as Lee Lorenz’s, Jack Ziegler’s and Mick Stevens’s), I have never seen a collector’s collection before.

It wasn’t news to me that so many of the cartoon gods drew large, but watching Stephen presenting one large framed piece after another made a lasting impression. I remain amazed by the ability of certain artists to keep their drawing all together on such a large scale. The moment that will always stay with me: spotting Peter Arno’s “I’m sorry, sir. You just missed the floor show” set out on a flat surface. The drawing itself looked as if Arno drew it moments before we showed up at Stephen’s home. It’s a spectacular piece from the magazine’s golden age. Look for it at the Society next year.
