Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of May 31, 2021

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: For a split second, when this week’s cover appeared on my screen, I thought we had fast-forwarded to the January 3, 2022 issue (y’know, New Years, with cocktail glasses and a top hat). I admit I needed to go to the magazine’s Q&A with the cover artist to help me out on this one.

The Cartoonists:

The Cartoons: Fifteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist. In this issue that duo is Dan Abromowitz & Eli Dreyfus). No newbies, no other duos (that we know of).

From The New Yorker cartoonist trivia department: I believe this is closest we’ve come to an issue entirely comprised of cartoonists who began contributing to the magazine in the 2000s. Chris Weyant, who began contributing in 1998, is the exception. Here are his fellow artists this week along with the date they began contributing to The New Yorker.

Maddie Dai (2017); Liana Finck (2013); Abromowitz & Dreyfuss (2015); Charlie Hankin (2013); J.A.K. (2014); Julia Suits (2006); Zach Kanin (2005); Avi Steinberg (2012); Navied Mahdavian (2018); Elisabeth McNair 2018); Ed Steed (2013); Emily Flake (2008); Ellis Rosen (2016); Ellie Black (2019).

A few weeks ago, I said I wouldn’t be posting a Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch anymore. I lied — it will continue. Rea Irvin’s beautiful masthead (below) appeared in The New Yorker for 92 years until being replaced by -gasp! — a redraw.  Read about it here.
