Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of January 23, 2023

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: blurry city street scene

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Fourteen cartoons, fifteen cartoonists (Emily Flake has a “Sketchpad”). Two duos, that we know of (the Spill considers duos as one cartoonist). No newbies. The longest active cartoonist in this issue is David Sipress, who began contributing in 1998 [re-visit the Spill’s 2022 interview with Mr. Sipress here].

The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonists: Eddie Ward, Joe Duffy, Liam Walsh.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

The Spill continues its back to the future push. The below Rea Irvin Talk design ran for 92 years before being ousted and replaced by a redrawn version in 2017. Sometimes “new ideas” don’t work out (witness the Cadillac Cimarron). So…let’s hope Mr. Irvin’s perfect design returns.
