The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: Birds.
The Cartoonists And Cartoons:
Sixteen cartoons, seventeen cartoonists (Emily Flake has a Sketchpad). No newbies, no duos, that we know of. The longest active cartoonist contributor in this issue is Roz Chast, whose first cartoon appeared in the magazine in July of 1978.
This issue includes a terrif drawing by the late Sam Gross (he passed away in May of last year).
The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonists: Drew Panckeri, Mick Stevens, Mads Horwath
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
The above perfect Rea Irvin Talk design was in place for 92 years, only to be snatched away in early 2017 and replaced by — gasp! — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator. The Spill clings to the hope that Mr. Irvin’s work will one day return.
