The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: a person in a hat in a lake.
The Cartoonists And Cartoons:
Twelve cartoons, twelve cartoonists. One duo, that we know of (the Spill counts duos as one cartoonist). The longest active cartoonist in this week’s issue is Roz Chast, who began contributing in July of 1978.

More Design Tinkering:
In this new issue you’ll notice the below when you turn to Goings On About Town:
The new design does away with the full page photo that’s lead off GOAT for a while (the use of a full page photo was itself a modern redesign of the section). The look of this new compact section (now just 2 pages) hearkens (yes, hearkens!) to the original GOAT design (see below).
Out with the old new…last week’s GOAT:
In with the new…this week’s GOAT:
A GOAT from the issue of August 11, 1975
The very first GOAT in the very first issue of The New Yorker, February 21, 1925:
The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
Speaking of redesigns and tweaking…hey, this would be a great time to bring back Rea Irvin’s Talk design, shown below. No tweaking necessary (ala GOAT) — the classic design works, as is.
(Back in May of 2017, Mr. Irvin’s Talk design was escorted out of the building and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. Read more here)
